Formed in 1977, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band revolutionized the sound of the New Orleans brass band by blending funk and bebop influences into the traditional style that had evolved over decades of street parades, parties and jazz funerals. The success of Dirty Dozen sparked a revival of the waning brass band scene in the Crescent City and most subsequent New Orleans brass bands have been heavily influenced by this ensemble. The eight-member band has recorded with a diverse range of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Elvis Costello, the Neville Brothers, Manhattan Transfer, Dr. John, Chuck D, John Medeski and Gov’t Mule. On its own, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has recorded more than 15 acclaimed albums since making its recording debut in 1984. The band’s most recent album is What’s Going On, an ambitious and poignant re-imagining of Marvin Gaye’s landmark 1971 album as a statement on post-Katrina New Orleans.
