Les Chauffeurs a Pieds is a three-man band from Québec City that tends to provoke one of two reactions from reviewers and fans. The first is to proclaim the trio “the next big thing from Québec,” as Folk World did, and the other is to ask “why aren’t these guys famous?” as Sing Out did. Antoine Gauthier (fiddle, mandolin, banjo), Benoît Fortier (recorder, harmonica, feet) and Olivier Soucy (guitar, banjo, fiddle) are working on that second part, touring the world with their infectious, innovative, high-energy take on traditional Celtic music from Canada, Ireland, France and Scotland—reels, jigs, waltzes, call-and-response songs and the foot percussion that is so common in traditional Québécois music, all served up with wit and great good cheer. Les Chauffeurs a Pieds (which translates literally as “drivers on foot”) has recorded five albums since 1999, the most recent of which is Au studio des trois lits.
