A Miami Valley cultural institution
since the mid-1970s, the
Corndrinkers is an old-time stringband that channels
the sound and spirit of the "Golden Age" of
country music--the 1920s and 1930s. With the twin fiddles
of Linda Scutt and Barb Kuhns echoing the great north
Georgia dance bands and leading the charge, Tom Duffee
(banjo), Doug Smith (guitar) and Al Turnbull (bass)
have played at festivals and dances (including many
Cityfolk social dances) throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia,
North Carolina and elsewhere in the Appalachian region.
The band is a Saturday night tradition in southwestern
Ohio, thanks to the weekly square dances the Corndrinkers
have hosted for more than a quarter century at Carriage
Hill Farm in Huber Heights . Inspired by the songs and
tunes of such country music pioneers as Uncle Dave Macon,
the Skillet Lickers, Charlie Poole and the Carter Family,
the band has recorded one CD, The Corndrinkers.
The dances will be called by Ceal Turnbull,
favorite caller for over 20 years at the Carriage Hill
Farm Square Dances, and Kathy Anderson,
whose enthusiasm and wit combined with her repertoire
of flowing contras always guarantee a fun and exhilarating
dance experience!
