The Holmes Brothers—bass player Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist Wendell Holmes and drummer Popsy Dixon—exploded on the U.S. roots music scene in the late 1980s with a unique and funky fusion of blues, R&B, country and gospel music that has since made the eclectic band “a musical force unto themselves” (Billboard). With exceptionally soulful three-part vocal harmonies soaring over a bluesy, hard-driving groove, the New York-based trio combines roadhouse energy with church house fervor. The band has recorded 10 acclaimed albums since 1989, the latest of which is State of Grace on Alligator, and won “Band of the Year” honors at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis in 2005. The Holmes Brothers, called “juke-joint vets with a brazenly borderless view of American music” (Entertainment Weekly), tour constantly and have appeared on such TV shows as The Late Show with David Letterman, The CBS Saturday Early Show and Austin City Limits.
