Direct
from its recent performances at the New Orleans Jazz &
Heritage Festival, the Hot
8 Brass Band marches north to showcase its unique
sound that blends jazz, funk and hip-hop with the traditional
style of New Orleans parade bands. Formed in 1995 by tuba
player Bennie Pete, the young band plays for “second
line” street parades, traditional New Orleans jazz
funerals and at music festivals and concerts around the
world. An appearance in Spike Lee’s post-Katrina
documentary film When The Levees Broke brought
new acclaim to the ten-man band, which includes snare
and bass drums, tuba, three trumpets, three trombones
and saxophone. The Hot 8 Brass Band, based in the historic
Sixth Ward neighborhood of Treme on the outskirts of the
French Quarter, has two albums to its credit, the second
recorded live at the Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2006,
and is currently working on its third release.
