As he gets set to celebrate his 70th
birthday in 2008, Cityfolk proudly presents one of the
true giants of jazz piano, Steve Kuhn.
His half-century professional career began with jazz
legends such as Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Art Farmer
and John Coltrane (he was the original pianist in the
saxophonist’s first quartet). His career as a
leader, which began in the early 1960s, has produced
an expansively beautiful body of work.
“Pianist Steve Kuhn’s virtuosity, humor
and audacious imagination combine to make him one of
a kind.” -W. Royal Stokes, The Washington
Post
“The most amazing aspect of Kuhn’s playing
is his touch control on the piano. His mastery of the
soft, muted hues and the loud thunderous colors of the
piano is unmatched in jazz. One would have to go to
classical masters such as Horowitz to find a similar
tone control.” -Ted Gioia, The Stanford Daily
