Oud and violin virtuoso Simon
Shaheen is arguably the most renowned Arab musician
and composer of his generation. An Arab Christian born
in Israel, Shaheen now lives in New York City and leads
two critically acclaimed performing groups, the Near
Eastern Music Ensemble, which specializes in traditional
Arabian music, and Qantara, which blends that older
style with classical, jazz and Latin music. Shaheen
won the National Heritage Fellowship in 1994, the highest
official honor bestowed upon traditional and folk musicians
in the U.S. Shaheen’s breakthrough album with
Qantara, Blue Flame, was hailed as “a
new benchmark in Arab-Western fusion” (CMJ).
