World Rhythms

The World Rhythms Fellows program was created in 2006 in an effort to deepen the impact of artists appearing as part of the World Rhythms concert series. Now in its second year, World Rhythms Fellows help illuminate the role of the arts in education and as a tool for building community.

The first World Rhythms Fellow in 2006-2007 was the renowned Rwandan musician and human rights activist Jean Paul Samputu, who captivated students during his visit with his majestic music and a message of peace and reconciliation. Samputu's residency was held in conjunction with UD's Human Rights Week celebration.

Now Cityfolk and its World Rhythms co-presenter, the University of Dayton Arts Series, are pleased to welcome the 2007-2008 World Rhythms Fellow, world renowned oud and violin virtuoso Simon Shaheen to Dayton for a week long residency.
Simon Shaheen

During his visit February 10-15, 2008, Shaheen - who has been called "arguably the most renowned Arab musician and composer of his generation" - will interact with students, faculty and community members in a series of workshops, lectures and public performances, several of which are open to the public.

The following appearances by Simon Shaheen are open to the public. All events are free, with the exception of the February 14 public performance. For additional information regarding events for teachers and students, please contact Dave Barber at 223-3655, extension 3015.
